Effective commercial catalysts for upgrading heavy oils must have specific pore structures that will maintain activities for asphaltene conversion and demetallization over a long period while carbon and metals are continuously being deposited. The asphaltenic Bottom Cracking (ABC) catalyst, Chiyodas new residue-hydrotreating catalyst, has been developed for these purposes, with specific characteristics of chemical compositions and pore structures, which provides greater flexibility and economy in the residue hydrotreating operation. The ABC catalyst maintain its selective asphaltene-cracking and demetallization functions even with extremely large amount of metal deposition on the catalyst. The activities and stabilities of ABC catalyst have been proved in pilot plant tests and commercial operations for a number of residua. On the other hand, VisABC{sup SM} is Chiyodas servicemark for the new heavy oil upgrading process which uses an effective combination of hydroprocessing with the ABC catalyst and hydrovisbreaking reactions. The VisABC process selectively converts high metal- and asphaltene-containing heavy oils such as atmospheric residue (AR) or vacuum residue (VR) into naphtha, middle distillates, and high quality heavy fuel oils without coke or pitch as by-products. The reaction section employs a configuration in which the feedstock hydrovisbreaking heater is directly followed by a fixed-bed ABC reactor, enhancing conversion and improving product quality. They report here the results of comprehensive characterization on Arabian Heavy (AH) VR, Offshore California (CF) AR, and their treated oils (ABC, Visbreaking (VB), VisABC) by using instrumental analysis.
