OSTI ID:393856

The first part of the article, which was published in Programmirovanie No. 4, 1991, considered the syntax and logical symnatics of Datalog, as well as the Herbrand model-theoretic interpretation of Datalog, a theory of logical inference intended use with Datalog, an approach to computing fixed points of Datalog programs, and the notion of translating a Datalog gram into a system of equations is relational algebra. Issues concerning completeness of programs in Datalog were also considered. The second part of the article classifies methods for optimization of Datalog queries; well-developed methods are presented. There is a discussion of various datalog extensions that are currently under study; the authors also suggest further improvements that are necessary if Datalog is to be used for practical problems. The article is presented as a self-contained survey that is directed, in particular, toward database specialists who are unfamiliar with the concepts of logic programming. The first part of the article was accompanied by a Russian-language commentary.
