Comments on {open_quotes}datalog: A self-contained tutorial{close_quotes} by S. Ceri, G. Gottlob, and L. Tanca
The construction of deductive databases requires a combination of independently developed methods for database management and logic programming. This approach has rapidly (literally in the last 5-6 years) coalesced within projects associated with combining new information technologies and fifth-generation computer systems (the strategic programs of the USA and Japan. and the ESPRIT program in Europe). Work has proceeded so rapidly and new methods have appeared at such a rapid pace that practically no information is available in the Russian-language literature. The number of publications in this area is large. and the sources are very diverse. As a result, providing an introduction to deductive databases is a nontrivial problem. However, the problem has been somewhat simplified by the recent appearance of two monographs that summarize achievements in this area: J. Ullman`s two-volume {open_quotes}Principles of Database and Knowledgebase Systems{close_quotes}, and the book {open_quotes}Logic Programming and Databases{close_quotes}, by Ceri, Gottlob, and Tanca. Ullman`s two volumes provide an exhaustive overview of the subject: They also consider results that are already considers classical. The book by Ceri, et. al., is concerned exclusively with new methods that are promising and have practical applications. The publisher {open_quotes}Mir{close_quotes} has completed a translation of this book. Publication of the article by Ceri, Gottlob, and Tanca makes it possible to efficiently inform the readers of {open_quotes}Programmirovanie{close_quotes} about the basic results in the indicated areas. It is the first publication of this type of article. It is base on a report made at the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and was provided through the courtesy of S. Ceri for publication in our magazine.
