Scientific Videos

DEFINITION

One emerging format of STI is categorized as videos or multimedia. DOE produces hundreds of STI videos each year with significant scientific and technical content. Like full?text indexing of a document, content indexing of an audio or video file greatly enhances the retrievability of the STI as a whole and also enables a user to find the exact place in the video where the term he/she is searching for was actually spoken by the presenter or the narrator. These videos are typically from conferences and events where speakers or panels of speakers present the content. Webinars used to disseminate research results may also be recorded as a video. Whether the STI product is a conference presentation or some other event where Multimedia was used to present research results, the information can be made more easily accessible by announcing the item to OSTI.

SUBMISSIONS

Conference presentations that are in an audiovisual format (videos or multimedia) may be announced to OSTI using AN 241.3, available through the DOE E?Link System (https://www.osti.gov/elink/2413-submission.jsp). Simply follow the instructions provided in the award package on the Federal Assistance Reporting Requirements Checklist (DOE F 4600.2). Using E?Link, the required metadata are filled in on the AN 241.3. Videos that are accessible to the public can be announced by providing the URL where the video is located. STI AVAILABILITY

OSTI.GOV (https://www.osti.gov) is the primary search tool for DOE science, technology, and engineering research and development results and the organizational hub for information about the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information. OSTI.GOV makes discoverable over 70 years of research results from DOE and its predecessor agencies. Research results include journal articles/accepted manuscripts and related metadata; technical reports; scientific research datasets and collections; scientific software; patents; conference and workshop papers; books and theses; and multimedia. OSTI.GOV contains over 3 million records, including citations to 1.6 million journal articles, 1.1 million of which have digital object identifiers (DOIs) linking to full-text articles on publishers' websites. OSTI.GOV provides access to this DOE STI by offering numerous easy-to-use search capabilities and customization options; and for the DOE community, additional citation information is available to help researchers evaluate article impact and find related research.

DOE ScienceCinema (http://www.osti.gov/sciencecinema) includes more than 3,600 multimedia scientific videos from DOE national laboratories, other DOE research Facilities and CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), and makes them searchable using Watson speech?recognition search technology. The ability to search and "jump to" the spoken words in a video that may be an hour or longer is a unique, added value. Released in February 2019,DOE ScienceCinemawas updated for a new look and feel, as well as new features including: more powerful searching, filtering options, account and playlist functionalities, larger video players, and further audio searching within individual videos.

OSTI.GOVandDOE ScienceCinemaare included in the Federal science portalScience.gov(https://www.science.gov) and the international science portalWorldWideScience.org(https://worldwidescience.org).Science.gov, hosted by OSTI, offers free access to research and development (R&D) results and scientific and technical information from more than 60 databases from scientific organizations across 13 federal agencies. WorldWideScience.orgsearches over 100 STI resources including national libraries and information centers from more than 70countries.

OSTI also works in close collaboration with Google and others, using Sitemap Protocols and other information industry standards to facilitate the discovery of DOE STI through widely used search engines.
