Abstract

A solid state radioluminescent composition for light source comprises an optically clear polymer organic matrix containing tritiated organic materials and dyes capable of "red" shifting primary scintillation emissions from the polymer matrix. The tritiated organic materials are made by reducing, with tritium, an unsaturated organic compound that prior to reduction contains olefinic or alkynylic bonds.

Two new types of radioluminescent (RL) compositions light sources are provided. The first type is an all-organic system, consisting of covalently bound tritium within a solid, optically clear polymeric matrix. The matrix contains organic scintillation dyes that capture excitation energy from beta decay and red-shift the energy in a stepwise fashion, after which a chosen wavelength is emitted as fluorescence. Demonstration of completely organic, optically clear radioluminescent light

A new type of radioluminescent light source has been demonstrated. This all-organic system consists of covalently bound tritium within a solid, optically clear polymeric matrix. The matrix contains a set of organic luminophores that capture excitation energy from beta decay and red shift the energy in a stepwise fashion, after which a chosen wavelength is emitted as fluorescence. Both blue and orange lights have been fabricated. Unlike currently available tritium gas tube lights or radioluminescent paints, the brightness of these new systems is, in principle, scalable because self-attenuation and absorption effects are minimized.

All-organic, optically clear, radioluminescent lights

We describe the development of the first all-organic, opitcally clear, radioluminescent (RL) light. Although gas-phase RL lights have been known for many years, a number of advantages accrue to solid state devices. These include greater ruggedness and ease of brightness scale-up. In our systems, tritium is covalently bound to an organic getter, which is dissolved in an organic monomer, along with appropriate scintillating dyes. The entire system cures by monomer polymerization due to the radiation field, resulting in a clear, glowing solid plastic block. We outline here the design considerations employed in producing these materials. 12 refs., 1 fig.
