Abstract

Over the past 12 months, Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM), has successfully conducted an evaluation of its nuclear material holdings. As a result, approximately 46% of these holdings (36% by mass) have been reclassified as no defined use (NDU). Reclassification as NDU allows Sandia to determine the final disposition of a significant percentage of its legacy nuclear material. Disposition will begin some time in mid CY2000. This reclassification and the proposed disposition of the material has resulted in an extensive coordination effort lead by the Nuclear Materials Management Team (NMMT), which includes the nuclear material owners, the Radioactive Waste/Nuclear Material Disposition Department (7135), and DOE Albuquerque Operations Office. The process of identifying and reclassifying the cats and dogs or miscellaneous lots of nuclear material has also presented a number of important lessons learned for other sites in the DOE complex.

Research is being conducted at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) which is directed toward development of a quantitative basis for disposition of actinide-bearing process residues (both legacy residues and residues generated from ongoing programmatic operations). Since 1949. Sandia National Laboratories/New Mexico (SNL/NM) has conducted research and development activities in support of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and other federal agencies in partnership with universities and industry (1). Several of these projects have generated transuranic (TRU) or suspect TRU wastes. Successful Waste Treatment Methods at Sandia National Laboratories

During the remediation of the waste landfills at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico nine drums of mock high explosives were generated. This mixed waste stream was proposed to several offsite vendors for treatment and prices ranged from $2.50 to $10 per gram a total cost estimated to be in excess of $2 million dollars. This cost represents more than 30 percent of the annual budget for the Sandia Waste Management Operations. Concentrated solutions of common oxidizers, such as nitrates, nitrites, and peroxides, will also act as oxidizers and will give positive results in the Hazard Categorization oxidizer test.more »« less
Free-ranging dogs and cats on the Oak Ridge Reservation: Situation and solution

The free-ranging cat and dog population on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) was evaluated because of concern about the possibility of attacks on humans, the transmittal of disease, the impact on native ORR wildlife, and nuisance problems.
