Title: Hybrid superconducting solenoid as a focusing element in a superconducting heavy-ion accelerator

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7317384

The feasibility of using superconducting solenoids as focusing elements in the Argonne Superconducting Heavy-Ion Linac Booster is examined. If the superconducting solenoid provides adequate focusing power, it will have a number of advantages over the quadrupole doublet. The focusing power required is discussed, and the design and construction of a focusing solenoid are described. It is shown that it is straightforward to construct solenoid focusing elements adequate for use in the Argonne booster and that the fabrication cost per unit is modest. (PMA)
