Electric heating for high-temperature heat transport fluids

Recent experiences with electric resistance heaters at the solar Central Receiver Test Facility are described. These heaters are used to preheat or maintain equipment used with molten nitrate salt or liquid sodium heat trnasfer fluids. Results of extensive testing performed to improve the reliability of similar heating systems used in the development program for the sodium-cooled liquid metal fast breeder nuclear reactor are also reviewed. Recommendations are made for increasing the reliability of trace heating systems for high-melting-point heat transfer fluids including thermal design, heating element selection, installation, insulation, and controls.
