Low rank coals were found to be soluble in dilute NaOH solutions. Solubilities of coals were highest in coals containing >20% oxygen. Solubilized coals could easily be separated from insoluble mineral inclusions and recovered by the addition of calcium at concentrations greater than 10mM. The potential use of this treatment for coal processing is discussed. 4 refs., 3 figs., 3 tabs.
