Title: Modeling of coupled processes in subsurface transport of reactive contaminants. Semi-annual progress report and final report, July 1995--December 1995

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/538076· OSTI ID:538076

This project commenced on February 1, 1993, and is part of the Subsurface Science Program Co-Contaminant Chemistry (CCC) Subprogram. The Principal Investigators are Albert J. Valocchi of the University of Illinois and Bruce E. Rittmann of Northwestern University. The Graduate Research Assistants are Caroline Tebes of the University of Illinois and Jeanne VanBriesen of Northwestern University. Effective January 1, 1996, the project was renewed under the same title as Grant Number DE-FG02-96ER62155 to Northwestern University. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop and utilize a two-dimensional transport code that can handle spatial heterogeneity and the complex chemical and microbial reactions present when radionuclide and strong organic chelaters are co-contaminants in a subsurface setting. Currently, the research at the University of Illinois is focusing on transport modeling with spatial heterogeneity and relatively simple reactions; the Illinois is focusing on transport modeling with spatial heterogeneity and relatively simple reactions; the Illinois code is called FEREACT. Researchers at Northwestern are focusing on the complex chemical and microbial reactions and batch experiments used to elucidate them; the Northwestern code is called CCBATCH. Both codes are being developed so they can be combined ultimately.
