WORK METHODS FOR THE POST-IRRADIATION EXAMINATION OF EXPERIMENTAL FUEL ELEMENTS
At Chalk River, the personnel engaged on materials research operate two high density concrete hot cells and a line of seven lead shielded dry-boxes for the examination of irradiated fuel specimens, both metal and ceramic. Transfer techniques and working methods for a typical examination are described. Experience over the past nine years has shown that having the research personnel directly in charge of the detailed post-irradiation examination has several advantages, such as flexibility in scheduling, knowledge of the limits of remote control operation allowing rapid development of suitable equipment, and elimination of misunderstandings and delays in the dissemination of post-irradiation results.
