[Development and use of a liquid-helium cryostat]. Final report, June 15, 1969--June 14, 1972
Under the contract a liquid-helium cryostat has been developed and tested which allows collection of three-dimensional x-ray diffractometer data at liquid-helium temperatures. The design is such that collection of accurate low temperature data is relatively easy compared with other low-temperature techniques. The instrument can be adapted to several commercially available threecircle diffractometers and thereby opens an extensive new field of crystallographic studies. The manufacturer of the instrument (Cryogenics Associates of Indianapolis) has since supplied the cryostat to several crystallographic laboratories in the U. S. and Europe. The instrument has been used for charge density determinations by diffraction methods, and for studies of temperature dependent magnetic behavior in iron complexes. Its potential is being applied in further studies presently sponsored by the National Science Foundation. (auth)
