Title: Studies of radial reflector worth dependence on radial component properties and arrangement in a fast-spectrum reactor

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4305431· OSTI ID:4305431

Declassified 21 Sep 1973. The evaluation is presented of the dependence of the worth of movable radial reflectors on material composition and radial arrangement of non-core components for the 710 fast-spectrum, refractory-metal reactor design concept. The non-core components are assumed to consist of thermal radiation barriers, pressure vessel, and radial reflector. The effect of a gap between the core and radial reflector is also explored. Beryllium, molybdenum, and Inconel 600 are being considered for the radial reflector; molybdenum, niobium 752 alloy, Inconel 600. and Type 316 stainless steel for the pressure vessel. Design concepts are included that permit convective cooling in the radial reflector, and that exclude convective cooling in the reflector. In the latter case, the generated heat in the radial reflector is radiatively transferred to adjacent components, i.e., the pressure vessel or the envelope shield. (auth)
