Title: DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXCER PROCESS V: RECOVERY, PURIFICATION, AND IRON REDUCTION OF URANIUM USING A SULFATE ION EXCHANGE SYSTEM

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4280508· OSTI ID:4280508

A uranium sulfate process flowsheet for the production of UF/sub 4/ from sulfate ore leach liquors is presented. The uraninm is sorbed on an anion- exchange resin from 0.2 M sulfate ore leach and eluted with 2 M H/sub 2/S0/sub 4/. Iron powder reduces UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ to U(SO/sub 4/)2 which is then sorbed on anion-exchange resin to separate it from the iron and eluted from the anion- exchange resin with 2 M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. The resulting U(SO/sub 4)2 is sorbed on a cationexchange resin from the H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solution and eluted from the resin with 5 to 6 M HCl. The UCl/sub 4/ thus produced may be treated with stoichiometric amounts of HF in order to precipitate UF/sub 4/.3/4H/sub 2/O. (auth)
