An intensive treatment is presented on the chemistry of Zr and Hf. Their solution chemistry is not well known because of colloid formation, hydrolysis, and polymerization. Coprecipitation of tracer Zr and Hf and the complexing ability of various chemicals for Zr are discussed together with several chelating agents. The extractabilities of ethyl ether, hexone, butyl phosphates, and trialkylphosphine oxides for Zr and Hf are given. Zr and Hf may be separated from each other and other metals by ion exchange, and methods for such separations are given. Counting and radiochemical procedures for the determination of Zr and Hf and separation from fission products are given. In particular, methods are given for the isolation of Zr from uranyl nitrate and from the Y89(d,2n) reaction. A bibliography of 52 references is given, and 13 more are given as general reviews of the inorganic and analytical chemistry of Zr and Hf.
