Pycometer, profilometer, and laser puncturing for space reactor fuel capsule examination

Investigators at ORNL working on space reactor fuels have asked us for post-irradiation data that could not be obtained with equipment on hand in the High-Radiation- Level Examination Laboratory. The first request was for the bulk density of swollen and cracked fuel pellets, the second was for continuous diameter and profile measurements on short (4 1/2 in.) test capsules, and the third to puncture these capsules for gas collection without cracking the capsule wall. Apparatus that was developed to obtain the required data is described.
