The goals of this project were to (1) design, build, and operate a 2.5 ton per day integrated biomass fast pyrolysis Pilot Plant to produce large amounts of bioproducts, and (2) test the bioproducts performance for market acceptability to replace petroleum based fuels, chemicals and materials. The project brought together private industry and public institution partners whose specific expertise was applied to engineering scale-up of biomass fast pyrolysis technologies and the development and pre-commercial testing of high quality industrial biofuel and bio-products. The project included the design, construction, and operation of a 2.5 dry ton/day biomass thermal conversion facility based on the ¼ ton per day pyrolysis pilot plant developed at Iowa State. Product testing was to focus on converting non-food agricultural and woody biomass resources into sustainable petroleum replacements for asphalt pavements and roofing shingles, biofuel blends for clean power generation, renewable chemicals and soil amendments while providing bio-carbon sequestration opportunities. The project was terminated upon completion of Task A.3 Detailed Engineering of the 2.5 TPD Fast Pyrolysis Pilot Plant, due to the inability to secure the funding necessary to begin construction of the plant and complete the project.
