Motivation: To meet the ever-increasing power requirements of our society, as well as minimize emissions and environmental impact, the efficiency, reliability, performance, and robustness of power plants need to improve significantly. As a consequence, research on all aspects of power plants, ranging from combustion, gasification, turbines, fuel cells, gas cleaning and separation and carbon dioxide separation and capture is being conducted. But it is not sufficient to simply provide advances in any (or all) of these areas. Advances in each of these areas increases the complexity of every component of a power system, and their integration creates fundamentally new problems in the areas of modeling, sensing, optimization and control.
