The United States and many other advanced countries planned to build information superhighways. The most desirable transmission medium for such communication networks was optical fiber. A high data rate signal, exceeding one Gigabit per second, would be split into many branch lines along the way before it reached an individual customer. In such a system, a number of optical fiber connectors (for one-on-one connection) and couplers (for one-to-many signal splitting) were required. The cost of these connectors and couplers were high at the time of the CRADA as to be nonviable. LLNL capabilities in optical propagation modeling offered the prospect of optimizing the novel splitter concept originated by Berkeley Optics. The purpose of this CRADA project was to assist Berkeley Optics in developing affordable fiber optic couplers that were a critical requirement for building information superhighways.
