Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy on litographically constructed microelectrodes

A novel silicon substrate microelectrode array has been demonstrated to function as a surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) microelectrode. SERS from adenosine and pyridine down to 10 mM concentration on silver coated iridium and gold microelectrode arrays have been observed with excitation at 532 nm and 633 nm correspondingly. Ag/AgCl reference electrode and platinum or integrated on the microelectrode iridium counter electrodes were used. The surface-enhanced Raman phenomenon was discovered in 1974 and analytical applications of it are only now being developed. Near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was first reported in 1988, and the characteristics of the technique are still being determined. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to the technique and to describe some of its characteristics. In addition, some of the applications being explored by the authors, including remote monitoring of groundwater contaminants and qualitative assays for drugs, are presented. 61 refs., 12 figs.

Advances in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for hazardous waste monitoring

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is being evaluated for use as an advanced method for detecting organic contaminants in groundwater during field-screening of environmental samples. The SERS technique offers attractive and unique capabilities for detecting a wide range of organic contaminants in aqueous environments at ppm to ppb levels. An inexpensive computer-controlled portable spectrometer system coupled to a fiberoptic probe has been developed for rapid on-site and in situ determination of organic contamination in groundwater. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy: a new tool for chemical detection

This paper describes the development of a new spectrochemical tecnique based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectrometry (SERS) for sensitive detection of organic chemicals. One type of substrate for SERS analysis consists of cellulosic substrates covered with silver-coated teflon microspheres. The second type of SERS-active substrate is based on thermally etched quartz plate having prolate SiO/sub 2/ posts coated with silver. The results indicate that SERS technique shows great promise as a useful tool for trace organic detection. 9 refs.
