Spontaneous fission in Special Nuclear Material (SNM) such as plutonium and highly enriched uranium (HEU) results in the emission of neutrons with energies in the MeV range (hereafter 'fast neutrons'). These fast neutrons are largely unaffected by the few centimeters of intervening high-Z material that would suffice for attenuating most emitted gamma rays, while tens of centimeters of hydrogenous materials are required to achieve substantial attenuation of neutron fluxes from SNM. High resolution fast neutron spectrometry without time-of-flight

Performance tests of a spectrometer tube of the type developed by Cuttler and Shalev show that the measurement of fast neutron spectra with this device can be made with an energy resolution previously obtainable only in large time-of-flight facilities. In preliminary tests, resolutions of 16.4 keV for thermal neutrons and 30.9 keV for 1-MeV neutrons were obtained. A broad-window pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) system is used to remove from pulse-height distributions most of the continua due to /sup 3/He-recoil events, noise, and wall effect. High resolution time- and 2-dimensional space-resolved x-ray imaging of plasmas at NOVA

A streaked multiple pinhole camera technique, first used by P. Choi et al. to record time- and 2-D space-resolved soft X-ray images of plasma pinches, has been implemented on laser plasmas at NOVA. The instrument is particularly useful for time-resolved imaging of small sources (< 150 [mu]m) such as implosions for which the necessary alignment accuracy is relaxed from [le] 10 [mu]m for a single pinhole, to 200 [mu]m for a nine pinhole column. Results at 20 [mu]m, 30 ps resolution are presented for > 2.5 key imaging, complementing the existing 1--3 key streaked X-ray microscope capabilities at NOVA.
