Title: Perforated monolayers. Progress report, July 1, 1990--December 31, 1992

Goal of this research program is to create ultrathin organic membranes that possess uniform and adjustable pores ( < 7{angstrom} diameter). Such membranes are expected to possess high permeation selectivity (permselectivity) and high permeability, and to provide the basis for energy-efficient methods of molecular separation. Work carried out has demonstrated feasibility of using ``perforated monolayer``-based composites as molecular sieve membranes. Specifically, composite membranes derived from Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of the calix[6]arene-based surfactant shown below plus poly[l-(trimethylsilyl)-l-propyne] (PTMSP) were found to exhibit sieving behavior towards He, N{sub 2} and SF{sub 6}. Results of derivative studies that have also been completed are also described in this report.
