Abstract

The objective of this analysis is to design and analyze the lifting bail of the 22 Ton Steel Waste Disposal Box (SWDB). The new design takes the original lifting bail and adds a hinge allowing the top portion of the bail to fold over towards the lid.

This safety evaluation for packaging evaluates and documents the ability of the plywood boxes listed below to meet the packaging requirements of WHC-CM-2-14, Hazardous Material Packaging and Shipping, for the onsite transfer of Type B radioactive material. Onsite transfer is the transport of hazardous materials on controlled routes confined to established limited areas and to portions of federally owned roadways to which public access is prohibited during transfer. Remotely controlled large container disposal methodology

Remotely Handled Large Containers (RHLC), also called drag-off boxes, have been used at the Hanford Site since the 1940s to dispose of large pieces of radioactively contaminated equipment. These containers are typically large steel-reinforced concrete boxes, which weigh as much as 40 tons. Because large quantities of high-dose waste can produce radiation levels as high as 200 mrem/hour at 200 ft, the containers are remotely handled (either lifted off the railcar by crane or dragged off with a cable). Transfer Cask Assembly Onsite Transfer of K-Basin Fuel at Hanford

Packaging Technology, Inc. was awarded a contract for the design and fabrication of a unique 18.5-ton transportation system to be used on-site at Hanford, WA. Unique aspects include rectangular cask geometry, solid 7 inch-thick stainless steel construction, hinged lid with remotely operable quick release locking mechanism. The lid maintains shielding and material confinement integrity after hypothetical accident conditions, and is equipped with a hydrogen venting system. This paper presents how the project requirements were translated into a successful design, and includes a brief discussion of a confirmation test program.

The 618-10 Burial Ground is approximately 485 feet by 470 feet and consisted of 12 trenches and 94 VPUs. It is located approximately 5 miles north of Richland, Washington in the 600 Area of the Hanford Site. The 618-10 Burial Ground received low- to high-activity waste (e.g., fission products and some plutonium-contaminated waste). Most of the waste originated at the 300 Area laboratory facilities.
