  1. Pan American Health Organization, Washington, DC (United States)

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), since its inception, has been actively involved in environmental and health issues. The work of the Organization in the field of environment covers a wide range of programs and projects in line with the wide diversity of economic and social conditions in the Region. At one end of the scale are the issues relating to water supply and sanitation that have been with us for centuries, as well as problems relating to inadequate housing, working conditions, etc. On the other side, there are issues that are now getting so much attention, such as widespread urban air pollution, increased use of all types of chemicals (including pesticides) and the issue of waste disposal (both solid and/or hazardous), all of which are closely identified with rapid economic growth. There is both an interest and need for training in all aspects of environmental control and protection.
