Title: Chemically prepared varistor material for lightning arrestor connector application; Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:720019

Chemically prepared (chem-prep) varistor material was evaluated as a possible replacement for mixed oxide material in varistor particle Lightning Arrestor Connectors (LACs). Chem-prep varistor materials were considered in the production of LACs for two reasons: (1) better production yields than the present mixed oxide materials as a result of controlled particle size, homogeneous mixing, and minimal in-process contamination; and (2) improved insulation resistance. The preparation of varistor material using chemical synthesis has proven to be successful in high-field varistors. The electrical properties can be set by adjusting the processing parameters, and the results can be reproduced. This suggests that new LAC material may be produced also using the chem-prep method. Based on initial studies, which included an evaluation of processing and electrical characterization, the chem-prep material showed very good promise as a replacement for the current LAC material. 1 ref., 18 figs., 16 tabs.
