Investigations on ultrastructure, Cd uptake and elementary analyses in Laminaria saccharina (L. ) Lamour
The present study examined the metabolic characteristics of CD uptake and structural and elemental analyses in the kelp Laminaria saccharina. The fine structure of L. saccharina showed typical phaeophycean characteristics. The composition of the outermost cell wall and vesicle activities near the plasmalemma faced to the outside were peculiar. They seemed to be involved in transport processes. The presence of plasmodesmata and sieve plates at end walls in the inner-cortical layer and trumpet hyphae in the medulla shows that the cytoplasm is continuous from cell to cell. This could form a structural basis for considering the possibility of symplasmic transport. Uptake and efflux patterns indicated the accumulation of CD in the tissue increased with incubation time.
