Title: Chernobyl accident. Hearing before the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, United States Congress, Second Session, June 19, 1986

Seventeen representatives of the nuclear industry, DOE, environmental organizations, electric power industry, and members of Congress testified at a hearing to review the effects of the Chernobyl accident in the Soviet Union on April 26, 1986 and its implications for the US commercial power program. The purpose of the hearing was to review the adequacy of licensing regulations and safety standards and to reassure the public. Witnesses, even those satisfied with the US safety record, emphasized the importance of continued efforts to reduce risks and to monitor and review procedures. Critics of the nuclear industry felt that more effort was put into selling nuclear power than to protecting public health and the environment. Industry spokesmen pointed to the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations training programs to illustrate their commitment. An appendix with responses to committee questions follows the testimony.
