Abstract

The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the SB latex production process and assess the potential for occupational exposure to 1,3-butadiene. The information will be used in determining the suitability of inclusion of the facility in an in-depth survey regarding the substance. The Allyn's Point Plant employs 164 people; 33 work in the SB latex area where 1,3-butadiene is used. The weighted mean 8-hour time-weighted average for 93 samples was 0.25 ppm. The results of the NIOSH analysis of bulk samples of SB latex were nondetectable. The level of detection was 0.04 ng/mg by weight. Based on a review of historical industrial-hygiene data provided by Dow showing detectable 1,3-butadiene exposures for two job classifications, it is the decision of NIOSH to include Dow as a candidate for an in-depth industrial hygiene survey.

A walkthrough industrial hygiene survey of the Dow Chemical Compay Allyn's Point styrene butadiene (SB) latex-producing facility in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, was performed. Bulk polymer samples were analyzed for free-monomer emanation at ambient, highest polymer process, and highest estimated end use temperatures. Quality-control testing included purity and dimer content of incoming 1,3-butadiene and residual 1,3-butadiene content of the latex. A walk through survey was conducted at EI du Pont de Nemours and Company, Orange, Texas in August, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the adiponitrile production process and evaluate the potential for exposure to 1,3-butadiene. Bulk adiponitrile samples were analyzed for 1,3-butadiene. Adiponitrile was produced by reacting 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide. All pumps handling 1,3-butadiene were equipped with dual mechanical seals. Due to possible worker exposure to 1,3-butadiene, a walk-through industrial-hygiene survey was conducted at Borg Warner Chemicals Woodmar Facility, Washington, West Virginia. The primary products of the facility are ABS plastics, polybutadiene latex and styrene butadiene rubber latex. In September 1981, a butadiene recovery system was added to the process vent streams. A walk-through survey was conducted at Colorado Chemical Specialties, Golden, Colorado in August, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate exposure to 1,3-butadiene during the manufacture of homopolymer and copolymer liquid polybutadiene resins. Bulk samples of styrene/butadiene and polybutadiene resins were analyzed for residual 1,3-butadiene. The resin was produced by solution polymerization. Engineering controls consisted of equipping all pumps handling 1,3-butadiene with single or dual mechanical seals. The quality control laboratory was equipped with exhaust hoods.
