Title: New polymer proves cost effective in offshore wells

Abstract

The ''Sticky'' nature (balling) of shales associated with drilling through the Continental Shelf, and its concomitant problems has led to the development of an experimental, shale-encapsulating polymer which may be added to a lignosulfonate/lignite mud system. The principal function of this new polymeric product is its strong adsorption on reactive shale, i.e., it is adsorbed on the shale and therefore protects the surface of the shale from the surrounding environment. A surface-active component also helps prevent the shale from sticking to the bottom hole assembly. Designated ES-828M, the polymer will not alter rheological properties nor the ability of the mud to generate a thin, impermeable wall cake. Nor will it deter the drilling fluid systems's ability to withstand solids and contaminants.
