Title: The initiation and detonation of explosives: An alternative concept

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6925188

An observed phenomenon designated as low-velocity detonation is not described properly by the ZND theory of detonation, nor is the deflagration-to-detonation transition, in which a rapidly burning explosive suddenly detonates with no external initiating shock. The alternative concept discussed can provide useful explanations of these phenomena. It also is a microscopic or atomic-scale model that is consistent with modern molecular dynamics and quantum-mechanical descriptions of shock waves in explosive materials. 80 refs., 19 figs.
