Title: Welding research embraces a use-it-now'' attitude

Journal Article · · Welding Journal (Miami); (United States)

The health of the present-day welding industry depends heavily on the state of welding research. Innovations, breakthroughs, continuing improvements--all the result of research--are the measures of an industry's vitality. To gauge this vitality, the editors of the Welding Journal visited select centers of activity in materials joining research to find the types of projects that hold promise for the future and to assess how the nature of welding research is changing. Two things became clear from the journeys: Much is going on in welding research and a significant amount of that research is conducted on a short-term basis to implement solutions to problems as quickly as possible. The funding for such research is shifting from industry sponsored to government sponsored. There are still industries that are actively sponsoring welding research internally, but over the years the number of individuals involved in that activity in industry has been diminishing. The main factor that has bolstered welding research in recent years has been the federal government's mandate to transfer technology to industry from the system of national laboratories operated by the Department of Energy (DOE). The authors found it impossible to report on all the research activities in materials joining that are presently occurring in this country, but they feel those activities described in this paper offer insight into the major directions research is taking and provide a glimpse of what is to come.
