n-Heptane precipitated asphaltenes from several crude oils and several pre-extracted coals of varying ranks were treated by ruthenium tetroxide which is known to selectively oxidize aromatic rings. A study of the branched and cyclic acids formed during this procedure showed that acyclic isoprenoid acids occurred in all asphaltenes and culminated at C{sub 21}, whereas hopanoic acids usually extended up to C{sub 36}. Steroid acids (C{sub 28}-C{sub 30}) were particularly abundant in the asphaltenes of Rozel Point seep oil and were identified by synthesis. They bear one additional carbon as compared with the steranes of the oil. Hopanoic acids and traces of steroid acids were also detected in the oxidation products of the less mature coals. Evidence from the carbon number distribution of the different families indicated that these molecules could at least partially be incorporated into high molecular weight entities via Friedel-Crafts type reactions. Simulation experiments carried out with pure standards confirmed this hypothesis.
