Over the past decade studies have revealed the presence of high cadmium (Cd) levels in the kidneys of several wildlife species living on Precambrian geological formations typified by the Canadian Shield and similar terrain in the Scandinavian countries. Following a visit to Canada, Frank reported high Cd readings in kidney from moose on the Canadian Shield, and this was confirmed for Ontario and for Quebec. In this study liver and kidney were collected and analyzed from bovine animals slaughtered on the Canadian Shield and those coming from farms on the glacial deposits south of the shield. Although an earlier study was conducted between 1980 and 1983 no separation was made between the two regions.
