Abstract

Rate coefficients for the dissociative recombination of electrons with the ions C{sub 3}H{sub 3}{sup +}, C{sub 6}H{sub 6}{sup +} and C{sub 10}H{sub 8}{sup +} have been measured using the Flowing Afterglow Langmuir Probe-Mass Spectrometer technique (FALP-MS). Values of 0.7 x 10{sup {minus}6}, 1.0 x 10{sup {minus}6} and 0.3 x 10{sup {minus}3}cm{sup 3}s{sup {minus}1} have been obtained. Studies are continuing on anthracene, C{sub 14}H{sub 10}{sup +}, and will be reported upon.

A novel technique using a flowing afterglow-Langmuir probe apparatus for measurement of temperature dependences of rate constants for dissociative recombination (DR) is presented. Low ({approx}10{sup 11} cm{sup -3}) concentrations of a neutral precursor are added to a noble gas/electron afterglow plasma thermalized at 300-500 K. Charge exchange yields one or many cation species, each of which may undergo DR. Relative ion concentrations are monitored at a fixed reaction time while the initial plasma density is varied between 10{sup 9} and 10{sup 10} cm{sup -3}. Dissociative recombination of HCO/sup +/: Complete active space (CAS) SCF electronic structure calculations

Laboratory measurements of the dissociative recombination of electrons with HCO/sup /plus// ions were performed using the stationary microwave afterglow technique as well as in a flowing afterglow Langmuir probe (FALP) experiment. CASSCF calculations suggest that the recombination of vibrationally cold HCO/sup /plus// ions with low-energy electrons can only proceed via an indirect reaction mechanism. A new technique, flowing afterglow with photoions (FIAPI), has been developed to measure the rate coefficient for the recombination of complex ions, and, in particular, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cations with electrons. The method is based on the flowing afterglow Langmuir probe - mass spectrometer apparatus at the University of Rennes I. A helium plasma is generated by a microwave discharge in a He buffer gas and downstream, a small amount of argon gas is injected to destroy any helium metastables. Dissociative Recombination and Excitation of CH{sup {plus}} {sub 5} : Absolute Cross Sections and Branching Fractions

The heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING was used to measure the absolute dissociative recombination and dissociative excitation cross sections for collision energies below 50 eV. Deduced thermal rates coefficients are consistent with previous beams data but are lower by a factor of 3 than the rates measured by means of the flowing afterglow Langmuir probe technique. A resonant structure in dissociative recombination cross section was found at 9 eV. We have determined the branching fractions in DR of CH{sup {plus}} {sub 5} below 0.2 eV. Dissociative recombination of water cluster ions with free electrons: Cross sections and branching ratios

Dissociative recombination (DR) of water cluster ions H{sup +}(H{sub 2}O){sub n} (n=4-6) with free electrons has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). For the first time, branching ratios have been determined for the dominating product channels and absolute DR cross sections have been measured in the energy range from 0.001 to 0.7 eV. Dissociative recombination is concluded to result in extensive fragmentation for all three cluster ions, and a maximum number of heavy oxygen-containing fragments is produced with a probability close to unity.
