Abstract

A synergistic interpretation of drilling logs, formation logs, production logs and pump test data, from a low temperature geothermal well is presented to yield the stratigraphic sequence and the nature and thickness of the permeable zones. The well penetrated fluvial and lake bed sediments (ash/clay/sand) with occasional basalt/andesite. An unconventional application of repeat temperature logging in a nearby well during the drilling of the subject well proved invaluable in locating permeable zones and in casing and completion.

During Phases 2 and 3 of the Lake City GRED II project two slim holes were cored to depths of 1728 and 4727 ft. Injection and production tests with temperature and pressure logging were performed on the OH-1 and LCSH-5 core holes. OH-1 was permanently modified by cementing an NQ tubing string in place below a depth of 947 ft. Well logs from a 1972 geothermal well drilled in California's Surprise Valley are discussed. The well is in an igneous formation, primarily basalt in the logged interval, and had a bottom-hole temperature of about 170/sup 0/C at a total depth exceeding 1400 m. It produced good flow rates from what is presumably a formation with predominately fracture-related permeability. The well has special interest because fractures could be located approximately by the appearance of well-defined secondary crystallization in the drill cuttings. Temperature changes with time in the slotted interval of a deep, shut-in geothermal well near thermal equilibrium: East Mesa Well 31-1, Imperial County, California, 1977-1982

Five precision temperature logs were obtained over a five year period (1977-1982) beginning three years after drilling and one year after last significant testing in East Mesa well 31-1 (32/sup 0/48.6'N, 115/sup 0/15.7'W). A sensitivity of measurement of 0.001/sup 0/C was maintained to the bottom of the well (165/sup 0/C, 180 bars). A complex sequence of basalt flows and sedimentary interbeds underlies Test Area North (TAN) at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in eastern Idaho. Wells drilled to depths of at least 500 feet penetrate 10 basalt-flow groups and 5 to 10 sedimentary interbeds that range in age from about 940,000 to 1.4 million years. Some of the advantages and pitfalls of lithology determination from digitized well logs are presented. Examples are provided from the Ore-Ida No. 1 geothermal well in Ontario, Oregon, drilled through a sequence of siltstone, clay, tuff and basalt/andesite. The use of histograms and crossplots to differentiate various lithological units and to identify alteration is illustrated.
