Abstract

This patent describes a method of treating a highly paraffinic hydrocarbon liquid containing not more than 5 wt% aromatics and from 10 to 10,000 ppm high molecular weight asphaltenes to prevent asphaltene fouling of equipment at temperatures below 400{degrees} F. It comprises: adding to the hydrocarbon liquid not less than 10 ppm and not more than 200 ppm of an oil soluble overbased magnesium alkyl aromatic sulfonate to inhibit asphaltene fouling.

Heavy hydrocarbons (M/sub R/ > 250) have been observed to dissolve in liquid water just below its critical temperature (374 /sup 0/C). Visual measurements of the solution temperatures of hydrocarbon/water systems confined in sealed quartz capillary tubes (autogenous pressure) show unambiguously that even very heavy heavy hydrocarbons (M/sub R/ > 400) form true solutions with water in a temperature-pressure region where both pure components can exist as liquids. Overbased high plus low molecular weight sulfonate waterflood additive

Laboratory studies using Berea sandstone cores gave improved recoveries by injecting an overbased anionic waterflood additive comprising (1) a water-soluble low molecular weight alkali metal hydrocarbon sulfonate having an equivalent weight of about 200 to about 400, (2) a water-insoluble high molecular weight alkali metal hydrocarbon sulfonate having an equivalent weight of about 400 to about 600, and (3) an overbasing amount of base component such as an alkali metal hydroxide. Connate waters having calcium and magnesium ions were treated with a chelating agent or trisodium phosphate monohydrate.

Canola oil conversion was studied at atmospheric pressure over Pt-ZSM-5 catalyst (0.5 wt% Pt) in a fixed bed micro-reactor. The operating conditions were: temperature range of 400--500 C, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 1.8 and 3.6 h{sup {minus}1} and steam/oil ratio of 4:1.
