Role of surface-active media in anaerobic filters

The performance of granular activated carbon and anthracite, of equal particle size, as filter media in completely-mixed anaerobic filters was compared, using solutions of glucose and phenol, and a diluted paint stripping waste water, as the test waste waters. The results of the studies are summarized, and they show that the surface-active activated carbon was more effective than the non-surface-active anthracite in removing COD, producing CH/SUB/4 and retaining biomass.
