Title: Influence of the magnitude of the surface of leaning additives on the caking of coals

Journal Article · · Solid Fuel Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6680580

When substances are added to reduce the swelling of a coal charge the action of the additive is determined to a large extent by the surface available for reaction. The caking behaviour of the coal and additive depends on the relationship of the thermophysical properties, and more particularly on the coefficients of thermal expansion. Additives with a large specific surface area are not suitable for assessing the caking properties of coal because of the powerful effect which they have. The most suitable additive for this purpose apppears to be aluminium oxide with thermophysical properties close to those of coke. (7 refs)
