Parallel development of ceramic based heat engines: analysis of the expected fuel savings associated with pursuing both the AGT and the uncooled diesel for passenger vehicles
Some within the materials and the heat engine communities feel that the barriers confronting the development of a ceramic based uncooled diesel are not as problematic as those barriers facing the development of the ceramic based advanced gas turbine (AGT). Given this scenario, the study examined whether pursuing a light-duty uncooled diesel (i.e., an uncooled diesel for passenger cars), in parallel with the AGT would increase the expected fuel savings from a given investment. The study indicates that although a light-duty uncooled diesel is perceived as having a better chance of being developed within a given time frame and budget, developing it in parallel with the AGT would not improve expected fuel savings. The cost penalty associated with diesel particulate traps would limit its commercialization. 9 references, 12 figures.
