Assessment of fish standing stocks in Wheeler Reservoir from cove rotenone samples in 1981 and 1982 with historical data comparison
Results of Wheeler Reservoir cove rotenone samples collected in 1981 and 1982 were analyzed for species and size class composition and compared with historical data to determine trends in standing stock during 1969 through 1982. All species collected in 1981 (38) and 1982 (36) were previously collected during preoperational and operational monitoring in Wheeler Reservoir. Mean (three coves) annual standing stock estimates of all species in 1981 were 127,843 fish/ha weighing 1064 kg/ha, increasing to 242,941 fish with a biomass of 1367 kg/ha in 1982. Threadfin and gizzard shad were the dominant species numerically in both 1981 and 1982. Gizzard shad was dominant in terms of biomass both years. Total standing stocks in Wheeler Reservoir (numbers and biomass) have increased since 1978 and were at an all-time high in 1982. Numbers or biomass of one or more size classes of 12 of 17 species, categorized as important or of special interest, were highest in either 1981 or 1982. 1 reference, 18 figures, 8 tables.
