This report covers the detailed analytical testwork conducted for control purposes during the collection and shipment phase as well as the results obtained by Lurgi and other parties on the composite barge sample. These tests were conducted to ensure quality control at every step during the shipment, obtain fines generation data during rehandling and establish a chemical and physical characterization of the coal for testing and design purposes. Lurgi concluded from the laboratory results that the Camp 1 coal is suitable feedstock for the Lurgi pressure gasification process. This confirms their early statements during the selection phase as reported in Volume 1. Lurgi reported that the ash melting characteristics under oxidizing conditions indicated a short ash which means that the steam/oxygen ratio will have to be controlled carefully. The chlorine content is significantly higher than most coals and the gasifier, but not the downstream equipment, must be fited with protective cladding. The Kentucky Department of Energy coal shipment examination report provides a confirmation of the ASTM standard data; in addition, analyses for macerals, microlithotypes, reflectances and anisotropy are given. The crushed, run-of-mine, oversize material which required more operating attention at Sasolburg was investigated as to source and characteristics. Specimens collected at Sasolburg and from the Kentucky stockpile were examined as reported in Section 7.2.
