Transformation of the primary carbide networks in high-speed steels by heat treatment at high temperatures

This work studies the modifications of eutectic carbide networks following heat treatment at temperatures close to the melting point. The morphological evolution of primary carbides is related to different mechanisms operating in four different stages identified in the transformation process of the eutectic structure. The level of modification attained by lamellar type eutectic colonies, depend chiefly on decomposition of metastable M/sub 2/C carbide, coalescence and dissolution of MC and M/sub 6/C carbides, and polygonization of the primary network.
