Determination of the shape of a free drop of magnetic fluid in a uniform magnetic field
Experimental results of previous studies were used to compare the form of a free magnetic fluid drop with an ellipsoid of revolution and to determine the range of parameters in which the experimental and theoretical data coincide. The drop has an axisymmetric shape with its symmetry axis along the field. The cross section of the drop with its plane along this axis was examined. Three parameters were selected for comparison: the area of ellipse, the sum of the focal lengths, and the radii of curvature of the various ellipses. Magnetic fluids MK-18 and MK-23 were used to study drop shape. The results of the comparison between the shape of a drop of magnetic fluid in a uniform magnetic field and an ellipsoid of revolution showed that with regard to the cross-sectional areas and the sum of the focal lengths, the forms of their surfaces nearly coincide up to sevenfold drop elongations. Dependence of the ellipsoidal shape on magnetic field strength was shown.
