The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of the ''acid rain'' issue, to summarize a new research initiative investigating the role of sulfur deposition on the condition of Lake States hardwood forests, and finally, to discuss the potential implications of acidic rain on Lake States forests, given current levels of uncertainty.
