On the relation between ozone and potential vorticity

The authors report on a study of the correlation between column integrated ozone, or total ozone measurements, and column integrated potential vorticity in the northern hemisphere for the period July 1990 to January 1993. The potential vorticity comes from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts general circulation model, while the ozone data came from NOAA TOVS total ozone data. There is good correlation observed between these observations with the exception of a limited number of winter events. Interpretation of these excursions is not readily apparent because of the lack of additional observations of the events.
