Appliance and vehicular electrification; An air quality benefit or bane
- Enercology Associates, Ltd., Balboa Island, CA (US)
South Coast Air Quality Management District is charged with providing clean air for the four counties in the Los Angeles Basin. These counties represent the most difficult climatic area in the country from the standpoint of their pollution control. A study was undertaken to determine the levels of NO{sub x} emission from central station utility boilers located in the four-county Basin on a seasonal basis and a diurnal basis. The emission determinations from the utility boilers were available from monitored test data and empirical data derived from a series of tests during the various operating periods. The results of the study indicated that emissions from gas-fueled hot water heaters, small industrial gas-fired boilers, and gasoline-fueled automobiles would compare favorably to the emissions from central station utilities in the Basin were those applications electrified. The information in this paper is extracted from two studies.
