The physical nature and structure of oceanic fronts
This monograph treats the diversity of fronts in the ocean in a context of modern physical knowledge about the ocean, its structure, and its interaction with the atmosphere. Numerous observational data, including those collected by the author himself, and satellite information, along with the relevant theoretical and numerical modelling results are used in the analysis. Oceanic fronts are presented as an important element of the ocean dynamics, as a physical phenomenon which for dynamical reasons possess a characteristic quality of long self-preservation. The book contains detailed discussions on frontogenesis in the ocean, frontogeneic role of synoptic scale eddies, generation of eddies on oceanic fronts, and structure of oceanic frontal zones. Special attention is given to the role played by oceanic fronts in the formation of thermohaline fine structure in the ocean. Biological implications of oceanic fronts are also discussed.
