Fermentation system cuts BOD 90%, converts sugar wastes to ethanol

A soft-drink bottler produced wastewater 70,000 gal/day with BOD 1240 ppm. Approximately 90-95% of all BOD is contributed from a 950 gal/day high-strength sugar wastewater. This wastewater is treated in a fermentation/distillation system to reduce BOD value by 90%; the treated effluent is then combined with the remaining wastewater stream to produce a total plant effluent of 240 ppm BOD with an overall BOD reduction of 80%.
