Walk-through survey report of the C. F. Hathaway Company, Waterville, Maine, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, February 10-12, 1981
An on site visit was made to the C. F. Hathaway Company located in Waterville and Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, for the purpose of determining employee exposure to formaldehyde (50000) during the manufacture of dress shirts. The Waterville facility had about 800 workers, of which about 470 operated sewing machines apparel presses, automated fusing machines, fabric spreaders or cutters. The Dover-Foxcroft facility had about 160 workers who operated sewing machines and apparel presses. Precured finished fabric was received from a textile finishing facility, and cut at the Waterville facility; the Dover-Foxcroft facility received shirt parts from the Waterville facility. Concentrations of formaldehyde at each facility were well below the levels recommended by all agencies for employee safety. The 8 hour time weighted average exposures were equal to or less than 0.21 parts per million. Levels could vary due to changes in temperature, humidity, type of fabric, and volume of work. The potential for low level exposures did exist at each site. Because the apparel press hoods were exhausted through a window of the Waterville site, the formaldehyde concentration could vary widely depending on the number of windows open in the summertime and the prevailing winds. The author recommends that this workforce be considered for possible inclusion in the NIOSH formaldehyde carcinogenesis study.
