Quantitative air analysis provides valuable information for indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations in airports, hospitals, museums, etc. Currently, grab sampling is the most frequently used monitoring technique. However, for certain applications real-time monitoring (RTM) is more suitable. RTM addresses a number of problems unattainable with traditional collecting devices. RTM is especially beneficial when fast response and quick analysis turnaround are required. RTM proves indispensable in monitoring short concentration spikes, accurate measuring of low pollution levels, and applications requiring in situ statistical validation. We present our results of applying RTM to IAQ problems. We have detected ozone, NO{sub x}, SO{sub 2}, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with sensitivity in the low parts-per-billion range and response time of a few seconds. Using RTM, we have determined penetration routes of combustion engine exhaust fumes into building air handling systems, have carried out on-site evaluation of the remaining chemical filter capacity, and have performed fast and comprehensive IAQ surveys in a 2,000,000 ft{sup 2} museum storage facility. We present examples when RTM enables better understanding of indoor air chemistry. We also discuss future applications of RTM and give recommendations for IAQ practitioners. 4 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
